Poster pixel size is the digital specification that connects your design file to the physical printed output. Get it right and your poster looks sharp at print size. Get it wrong and you get blurry images, pixelated text, and expensive reprints. The math is straightforward once you understand the relationship between pixels, DPI, and physical poster dimensions.

DPI stands for dots per inch. It describes how many ink dots a printer lays down per linear inch of output. Higher DPI means more dots per inch, which means finer detail and sharper edges in the printed output.
The formula for calculating poster pixel size is simple:
Pixel width = Physical width in inches x DPI
Pixel height = Physical height in inches x DPI
For a 24 x 36 inch poster at 300 DPI:
Pixel width = 24 x 300 = 7,200 pixels
Pixel height = 36 x 300 = 10,800 pixels
Total file size: 7,200 x 10,800 pixels
This tells you exactly what resolution your design file needs to produce a 300 DPI print at 24 x 36 inches. Build your file smaller than this and the printed output will look soft or pixelated. Build it larger and you are carrying unnecessary file weight without print quality benefit.
Core Formula: Pixel size = Physical size in inches x DPI. For a 24 x 36 poster at 300 DPI, that is 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. For a 11 x 17 poster at 300 DPI, that is 3,300 x 5,100 pixels. Apply this formula to any poster size and DPI combination.
Not all poster sizes need 300 DPI. The minimum acceptable DPI depends on the viewing distance of the installed poster. Posters viewed from close range need higher DPI. Posters viewed from distance can use lower DPI without visible quality loss because the viewer’s eye cannot resolve the individual dots from far away.
Here are the practical DPI guidelines by size and viewing context:
300 DPI: Standard for all posters 24 x 36 inches and smaller. This is the print industry standard for close-range viewing. At 300 DPI, the human eye cannot distinguish individual dots at any normal viewing distance. This is essentially the quality ceiling where further resolution increases produce no perceptible improvement.
150 DPI: Acceptable for large format posters from 36 x 48 up to 48 x 72. These posters are viewed from 15 to 50 feet away. At that distance, 150 DPI is indistinguishable from 300 DPI because the dots are too small to resolve at viewing distance. Using 150 DPI at large format sizes dramatically reduces file size without any visible quality loss.
100 DPI: Acceptable for very large format outdoor installations over 48 x 72 inches, or any poster designed to be viewed exclusively from 30 feet or more. Large format print vendors often specify 72 to 100 DPI for their largest format products. Confirm with your vendor before building at this resolution.

A common mistake in poster design is building the file at a small size and then scaling it up for print. This approach destroys quality. Here is what happens:
If you design a 24 x 36 poster at 72 DPI (screen resolution), your file is 1,728 x 2,592 pixels. When you tell the printer to output it at 24 x 36 at 300 DPI, the printer needs 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. It has to stretch 1,728 x 2,592 pixels to fill 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. The result is severe pixelation. Fonts look jagged. Photos look blurry. The print is unusable.
The correct approach is to set your document to 24 x 36 inches at 300 DPI before you begin designing. Then the poster pixel size is correct from the start. Every element you place in the file is at the right resolution for the output size. There is no scaling needed at print time.
If you need to adapt an existing design to a different poster size, scale down rather than up whenever possible. A 24 x 36 file scaled to 11 x 17 maintains or improves resolution. An 11 x 17 file scaled to 24 x 36 loses resolution and looks poor in print.
Design Rule: Always set your document to the final print size and the correct DPI before you start designing. Never build small and scale up for print. Build at full size and scale down if you need a smaller format.
Photographs are the element most often responsible for print resolution problems. Stock photos and client-supplied images frequently arrive at screen resolution (72 or 96 DPI) and are unsuitable for print without replacement or significant compromise in design.
For a 24 x 36 poster at 300 DPI, a full-bleed photograph needs to be at least 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. This is a large file. Stock photo services like Shutterstock, Getty Images, and Adobe Stock offer images at varying resolutions. The “XL” or “Vector” versions at these services typically provide sufficient resolution for 24 x 36 output. Always download the largest available resolution for any image that will fill a significant portion of a large poster.
If the photo will only fill a quarter of the poster, the resolution requirement is proportionally lower. A photo filling a 12 x 18 area on a 24 x 36 poster at 300 DPI needs to be 3,600 x 5,400 pixels, which is much more achievable with standard stock photography resolutions.
Vector graphics (created in Adobe Illustrator or similar tools) are resolution-independent. They do not have a pixel size. They are mathematical descriptions of shapes and lines that can be rendered at any size without quality loss. A vector logo scaled from business card size to 48 x 72 poster size loses no quality.
The only time vector graphics encounter resolution limitations is when they are rasterized (converted to pixels) during the design process. If you place a vector file inside Photoshop and rasterize it, it gets converted to pixels at the document’s current resolution. Do not rasterize vector elements in your poster unless the rasterization happens at the full print-size resolution of the document.
In professional print production workflows, vector artwork is typically kept in vector format (as Illustrator or PDF files with embedded vectors) through the entire process and only rasterized at the final print output stage. The print RIP (raster image processor) handles this conversion at the correct output resolution.
These are the errors our team sees most often when reviewing client-supplied print files:
Wrong color mode: RGB is for screens. CMYK is for print. A poster file built in RGB needs to be converted to CMYK before printing. The conversion changes some colors, particularly saturated blues and greens. Always build poster files in CMYK from the start to avoid color surprises.
Insufficient resolution: Building at 72 or 96 DPI and trying to scale to 300 DPI for print. This is the most common and most damaging mistake. Always build at the correct DPI for the poster size from the beginning.
Fonts not embedded or outlined: Text in a PDF file can appear incorrectly if the fonts are not embedded or outlined. Embed all fonts or convert all text to outlines before exporting the final print file.
Missing bleed: Print files without bleed result in white edges on the final printed piece when the paper is trimmed. Add 0.125 inch bleed to all sides of the poster file before export.
Transparency not flattened: Some print environments have trouble with unflattened transparency from layered design files. Flatten all transparency before exporting the final print PDF to avoid unexpected results.
Poster files serve two different purposes in the modern marketing workflow: print output and digital display. The pixel size requirements are different for each and the two requirements are sometimes in conflict.
For print at 24 x 36 inches and 300 DPI, you need 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. For digital display of the same poster on Instagram (maximum 1,080 pixels wide), the file only needs to be 1,080 pixels wide. The print file is vastly over-specified for digital display.
Never export your print-resolution poster file directly to social media. The file will be too large, will take too long to upload, and platforms may compress it further with their own algorithms. Instead, create a separate low-resolution crop of the poster for digital display. Use “Save for Web” or “Export As” functions in your design software to create a web-optimized version at screen resolution.
The reverse is equally important: never try to print a social media image at poster size. A 1,080 x 1,350 pixel Instagram image printed at 24 x 36 inches produces approximately 30 DPI, which prints completely unusable at any poster size. Social media images and print files are fundamentally different products and should be treated as separate files from the start.
Knowing the right pixel dimensions is only the beginning. Here is the full file setup workflow that prevents the most common print errors.
Step 1: Start at final size. Create your document at the actual print dimensions in your design application. In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, create a new document at 24×36 inches (or your target size) at 300 DPI. In Photoshop, create a new image at the full pixel dimensions. Do not design at a smaller size and scale up later. Scaling up introduces interpolation artifacts that degrade print quality.
Step 2: Add bleed before you start designing. Set your document bleed in the file setup stage, not after the design is finished. Trying to add bleed to a completed design often requires repositioning or resizing elements. The bleed zone is part of the document, not an afterthought. Standard bleed is 0.125 inches (one-eighth inch) on all sides.
Step 3: Work in CMYK color mode. RGB is for screens. CMYK is for print. Design your poster in CMYK from the start. Colors look slightly different in CMYK than in RGB, particularly vibrant greens and deep blues. Setting your document to CMYK from day one ensures you see what you will actually get in print. Converting from RGB to CMYK late in the process often produces color shifts that require design revisions.
Step 4: Check image resolution at 100 percent view. Every placed image in your poster should look sharp at 100 percent zoom in your design application. If an image looks soft or pixelated at 100 percent, it will print that way. There is no correction for an underresolution image that does not involve replacing it with a higher-resolution version.
Step 5: Export as PDF with all bleed and marks included. When exporting your final print file, use Press Quality or High Quality Print PDF settings. Include crop marks and bleed marks. Confirm that the bleed amount in the export settings matches the bleed you set in the document. Deliver the PDF to your printer with a clear note of the final trim size and bleed included.
Step 6: Request a soft proof before printing. A soft proof is a PDF or screen-optimized version of the final print file with simulated CMYK color. Review the soft proof carefully for color accuracy, text readability, and element positioning before approving the print run. A soft proof takes a few hours and costs nothing. A reprint of an incorrect poster costs real money and real time.
A 24 x 36 inch poster at 300 DPI requires a file that is 7,200 x 10,800 pixels. With standard 0.125 inch bleed on all sides, the full print file including bleed is 7,275 x 10,875 pixels at 300 DPI.
