Whether you are designing a concert promotion, a retail display, a conference presentation, or a street advertising campaign, the dimensions you start with determine everything that follows: the resolution you need, the font sizes that work, the printing method required, and the hardware that can display it.
This guide covers all standard poster measurements from the smallest flyer format to large outdoor sizes, with dimensions in inches, centimeters, and millimeters.

The ISO paper size system is used outside North America. These measurements are based on a consistent aspect ratio of 1:1.414. Each size is exactly half the area of the next size up in the same series.
Converting Between U.S. and Metric Measurements To convert inches to centimeters: multiply by 2.54. To convert inches to millimeters: multiply by 25.4. To convert centimeters to inches: multiply by 0.394. These conversions are exact, so there is no ambiguity in the math.
The measurements of your poster determine the file resolution you need. Resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI). A larger poster at the same DPI produces a larger file with more pixels. But the acceptable DPI decreases as poster size increases, because larger posters are viewed from farther away.

Notice that the pixel file sizes are similar across all poster sizes. The resolution number decreases as size increases. The total number of pixels needed stays roughly consistent because the viewing distance increases proportionally with the poster size.
Typography is measured in points. One point equals 1/72 of an inch. Font size does not automatically scale when you change the document size in your design software. You have to increase font sizes manually when designing for larger poster measurements.

Print cost scales with paper area. Larger measurements mean more material and more ink, which increases cost. The relationship is roughly linear for standard sizes within a print shop’s normal production range. Custom sizes may carry an additional setup fee.

Volume reduces the per-unit cost dramatically. A run of 500 24 x 36 posters at a commercial print shop costs far less per piece than a single print. If your campaign requires large quantities, get quotes for volume runs rather than single-unit pricing.

36 x 48 inches (914 x 1219 mm) in portrait orientation is the standard. Some conferences use 48 x 36 inches in environment or 44 x 44 for square boards.
Bleed is extra design area that extends beyond the trim edge, preventing white borders after cutting. Add 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on all sides of your poster measurements for any design that goes to the edge.
8.5 x 11 inches is the smallest size that can function as a poster. For genuine poster impact in most environments, 18 x 24 is the minimum effective size.
The U.S. uses a historical English measurement system that produces non-metric standard paper sizes. Europe uses the ISO system, which is based on metric measurements and a consistent aspect ratio. Neither is better; they just reflect different historical standards.
If you have an existing poster and need to reprint it, frame it, or order a matching piece, you need to know its exact measurements. The measurement process is straightforward but requires a bit of care to get accurate numbers.
Use a metal tape measure or a rigid ruler. Measure the printed area (not the white border, if any). Start at the left edge of the printed content and measure to the right edge to get the width. Start at the top edge of the printed content and measure to the bottom edge to get the height. Write down both measurements in width x height order.
If your poster is framed, measure the visible print area through the frame opening, not the outer frame dimension. Frames are always larger than the print they contain. If there is a mat board, measure the opening in the mat to find the visible print area. The actual print under the mat may be slightly larger than what is visible.
For ordering a matching frame, you need the print size, not the visible area through the mat. Ask the frame shop whether the frame size refers to the print size or the mat opening. This distinction causes confusion regularly and results in frames that do not fit.
Measuring posters for print production goes beyond physical rulers. Design software has built-in tools for measuring dimensions, and print shops have hardware and software calibration tools that ensure the physical print matches the specified measurements.
In Adobe Illustrator, the Artboard Options dialog shows the exact dimensions of your document. The Document Info panel confirms size, resolution, and color mode. In InDesign, Document Setup shows the page dimensions. In Photoshop, Image Size shows width, height, and resolution at the same time.
At the print shop level, large-format printers are calibrated against ICC color profiles and certified to print at the specified dimensions within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch. This means a 24 x 36 poster from a properly calibrated printer will be within 1/16 inch of those dimensions. For most applications, this tolerance is invisible. For applications that require tight hardware fit (like a specific display frame), measure the actual print after it arrives before cutting any hardware to size.
Not all poster design happens in professional desktop applications. Many users create posters in Canva, Google Slides, or online design tools. These platforms handle measurements differently than professional software, and understanding those differences prevents print problems.
Canva allows you to create custom-sized documents in pixels, inches, centimeters, or millimeters. For print projects, use inches or centimeters and enter your target dimensions directly. The platform will render at 96 DPI for screen display but can export at 300 DPI for print. Always choose the high-resolution export option for anything going to a commercial printer.
Google Slides does not use print measurement conventions. Slides are sized by screen aspect ratio rather than physical print dimensions. You can set custom slide sizes in inches under File menu, Page Setup, Custom. A 24 x 36 slide size produces a file that can be saved as a PDF and printed at that dimension. However, Google Slides is not a professional print tool, and color accuracy and font rendering may vary from what you see on screen.
PowerPoint supports custom slide sizes in inches. Under the Design tab, Slide Size, Custom Slide Size, enter width and height in inches. A 24 x 36 inch PowerPoint slide exports as a PDF that most print shops can accept for large-format printing. The limitation is that PowerPoint compresses images when saving to PDF, which can reduce print quality. Use Save As and choose PDF with full resolution settings for the best output.

When poster dimensions exceed 48 x 72 inches, the project transitions from a print job to an installation project. Large-scale installations require different planning, different materials, and in many cases different vendors than standard poster printing.
Building wraps can cover entire facades of multi-story buildings. The measurements for these projects are determined by the physical dimensions of the building facade, and the print is produced in sections that are assembled on-site. The sections are printed on perforated mesh vinyl that allows air to pass through, preventing wind load from pulling the installation off the building. A building wrap for a 10-story building might be 100 feet wide and 150 feet tall, requiring precise measurement of the actual building facade before any design work begins.
Large venue banners, arena concourse displays, and convention center installations are measured to the specific hardware systems installed at each venue. Arena banner systems are typically designed for 20 x 40 foot drop banners or similar dimensions determined by the rigging points installed in the venue structure. Convention center column wraps are measured to the column dimensions at the specific venue.
For any large-scale installation, the measurement process starts with a site visit or site survey. The venue provides architectural drawings, or a measurement crew takes physical measurements of the display area. The design is then created at 1:10 or 1:20 scale and produced at full scale for installation. Getting the measurements wrong at this scale means replacing printed material that cost thousands of dollars.
