Street postering has been how brands build presence in urban environments for over a century. The format still works. Here is why, and how professional campaigns are planned and executed.
A well-placed street poster does something that most advertising cannot: it becomes part of the neighborhood. When a poster appears on the right wall on the right block in the right city, it reads not as an interruption but as a presence. Pedestrians notice it. They photograph it. They see it every morning on the way to the subway. The brand behind that poster has embedded itself into the daily visual environment of its target audience without purchasing a standard ad placement.
We run professional street postering campaigns at American Guerrilla Marketing. Our team has installed posters on construction boards along Lafayette Street in SoHo, on the brick walls of commercial buildings along Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, on the surfaces adjacent to the L train infrastructure in Wicker Park, and on hundreds of other walls and barriers in every major US market. Each campaign starts with location strategy and ends with photo documentation. Everything in between is about getting the right poster in front of the right people.
This guide covers what street postering is, how campaigns are planned and executed, what creative requirements the format demands, what brands get the most out of it, and how to budget and measure a street postering program.
Street postering is the installation of printed posters on vertical surfaces in public urban spaces as a form of advertising, promotion, or artistic expression. The format has been part of urban visual culture since the nineteenth century. Concert posters, political notices, product announcements, and artistic manifestos have all used the street poster as a medium for reaching a mass urban audience at low cost.
Professional street postering campaigns for brands use large-format printed posters installed with wheat paste or similar adhesives at pre-scouted locations in target neighborhoods. The campaigns are planned with the same strategic rigor as any media buy: location is selected based on audience demographic, surface quality, and foot traffic volume. Creative is reviewed for format compatibility. Production is coordinated for the correct paper stock, size, and quantity. Installation is executed by an experienced crew with documentation following every placement.
The format occupies a unique position in the advertising environment. It is more visually prominent than a digital ad. It is less expensive than a billboard. It is more credible to urban audiences than a banner ad. And it reaches people in the physical environment they actually inhabit, rather than intercepting their digital attention in competition with thousands of other ads fighting for the same screen space.
Street postering works in any dense urban environment with significant pedestrian foot traffic. The format is most effective in cities where people walk as their primary mode of transportation and spend significant time moving through public spaces at a pace where a well-placed poster is visible and readable.
New York City is the strongest street postering market in the United States. The density of foot traffic in Manhattan and the outer borough commercial corridors, the abundance of brick and masonry wall surfaces, and the visual culture of the city that predisposes its inhabitants to notice and engage with street-level imagery all favor the format. SoHo, the Lower East Side, Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn, and Astoria and Long Island City in Queens are the zones where street postering campaigns consistently reach high concentrations of target demographics.
Los Angeles works differently. The city is less pedestrian-dense than New York, but there are specific corridors where foot traffic is high and street postering is well-running as a visual communication medium. Fairfax Avenue between Melrose and Santa Monica, Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, the Sunset Strip between La Cienega and Crescent Heights, and the blocks around the Palladium in Hollywood are strong postering zones with high concentrations of the music, entertainment, and streetwear audiences that most LA postering campaigns are trying to reach.
Chicago’s best street postering zones are the Milwaukee Avenue corridor in Wicker Park, the Logan Square commercial area, 18th Street in Pilsen, and the construction corridor walls in River North and the West Loop. Miami’s zones include Wynwood, Brickell, and the Lincoln Road corridor in South Beach. Austin’s strongest zones are 6th Street, South Congress Avenue, and the areas around the venues on Red River Street.
Surface selection is the most technical decision in street postering campaign planning. The right surface holds a poster for weeks. The wrong surface sees the poster on the ground by morning. Here is how we evaluate surfaces for campaign suitability.
Construction site barriers, the plywood and composite board fencing that surrounds active construction projects in urban areas, are among the most valuable street postering surfaces available. They offer large, flat, uninterrupted wall space at eye level, typically on major commercial corridors with high foot traffic. Construction barriers are culturally associated with urban advertising in major cities, and audiences register poster installations on them without surprise.
The limitation of construction barriers is their temporary nature. A building project that creates excellent postering wall space today may complete its exterior work in four to six weeks, eliminating the surface. We monitor construction timelines in target zones and advise clients on which barriers are early in their construction cycle and likely to remain available for the full campaign duration.
The brick side walls of commercial buildings in dense urban neighborhoods are the classic street postering surface. Old brick with a rough surface texture provides excellent adhesion for wheat paste and can hold a poster for four to eight weeks under good conditions. The exposure of the wall, whether it faces direct weather or is sheltered by adjacent buildings, significantly affects longevity. South and west-facing walls in northern cities get more sun and dry faster after rain, extending poster life. North-facing walls in humid climates stay wetter longer and see shorter poster life.
Utility poles, newspaper box clusters, and the columns supporting elevated transit infrastructure in cities like Chicago and New York are workable postering surfaces for smaller format posters. The curved surface requires careful installation technique to prevent bubbling, and the surface area limits poster size, but these surfaces are at extreme eye level for pedestrians and are encountered at very close range by everyone on the sidewalk.
Surface grading system: We grade every potential postering surface before recommending it for a campaign. Grade A surfaces are brick or concrete with high foot traffic visibility and good weather protection, expected longevity of four to eight weeks. Grade B surfaces are construction boards or less protected masonry, expected longevity of two to four weeks. Grade C surfaces are smooth painted walls or exposed surfaces with less protection, expected longevity of one to two weeks. We always target Grade A and B surfaces for professional campaigns.
| Campaign Type | Location Count | Geography | Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neighborhood Saturation | 25 to 40 locations | One neighborhood | 3 to 6 weeks | Local brand building, events |
| City-Wide Campaign | 50 to 100 locations | Multiple neighborhoods | 3 to 6 weeks | Product launch, tour promotion |
| Event Countdown | 20 to 35 locations | Event perimeter and approach routes | 1 to 3 weeks | Concert, film, sports events |
| Multi-City Campaign | 40 to 80 per city | 2 to 5 major markets | 3 to 6 weeks | National brand launches |
| Long-Run Campaign | 30 to 50 locations | Target zone | 6 to 12 weeks with refresh | Sustained brand presence |
Street postering puts creative through a demanding test. The poster is viewed by pedestrians in motion, typically at a distance of 5 to 20 feet, for a duration of one to three seconds. In that window, the poster has to communicate brand identity and a primary message clearly enough to register and be remembered.
The practical creative requirements are strict. One dominant visual element. One clear brand mark. Text of no more than six to eight words. High contrast between design elements and the expected background surface color. A graphic size and weight that is readable from 15 feet away. Any poster that does not meet these criteria will underperform in the street postering format regardless of how well it works in digital or print.
Color contrast with the installation surface matters more than most brand design teams expect. A poster with strong blues and greens installed on a construction board that has been painted gray tends to blend rather than pop. A poster with bright yellow, white, or red on a dark or neutral-colored surface creates the contrast that makes the installation register from a distance before the pedestrian reads it. We advise clients on color selection based on the typical surface colors in the target locations as part of our creative review process.
Our street postering campaign process has four stages: location scouting, creative review and production coordination, installation, and documentation.
Location scouting sends our team into the target neighborhoods to identify and photograph specific installation surfaces that match the campaign brief. We assess each surface for adhesion quality, foot traffic volume and audience character, visibility from pedestrian sightlines, and expected installation longevity. The client sees the full location list and photos before any installation is confirmed.
Creative review checks that the submitted artwork is suitable for the planned poster size and the surface environment before production. We flag issues and work with the client’s creative team to resolve them before printing. This step prevents expensive reprints caused by creative problems that appear only after production.
Installation happens overnight by an experienced two-person crew. We work efficiently to cover all planned locations in a single installation window, documenting each location as we go. The crew carries all materials including paste, application tools, posters, and documentation equipment.
Documentation is delivered within 24 hours of installation. Every location is photographed in daylight with GPS coordinates. The photo report shows every completed installation in the campaign and serves as the client’s record of campaign delivery.
Campaign refresh option: For campaigns targeting a sustained presence window of six weeks or more, we offer a mid-campaign refresh installation that replaces posters that have degraded below acceptable condition at any location in the campaign. The refresh maintains the campaign’s visual quality through the full intended duration without requiring a full new campaign installation.
Street postering delivers three distinct forms of value: targeted street-level exposure to the right audience in a specific geography, organic social media amplification when installations are photographed and shared, and cultural credibility that paid media placements in standard formats cannot provide.
The street presence argument is straightforward. A poster campaign that covers 40 locations in a neighborhood where 50,000 target-demographic pedestrians walk per week generates sustained brand exposure over a three-week campaign window, at a cost that typically outperforms comparable digital media in the same market for the quality of street-level encounter it produces.
The social amplification argument is about organic reach. A well-designed, well-placed poster gets photographed by people who then share it on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. A single post from a well-followed account can generate organic reach that extends well beyond the physical campaign footprint at no additional cost. Designs that make people want to photograph them, whether because they are beautiful, bold, funny, or surprising, extend the campaign’s visibility far beyond the physical installation locations.
The cultural credibility argument is harder to quantify but real. Brands that show up on walls in Williamsburg, Wicker Park, or Silver Lake are participating in the visual culture of those neighborhoods in a way that a digital ad never can. That participation is read by the culturally literate audience in those neighborhoods as a signal that the brand belongs there. For brands that are trying to build that association, no other format delivers it as directly.
Street postering campaign budgets have three primary components: print production, installation crew, and campaign management. Print production costs depend on paper stock, format, and run quantity. Installation crew, campaign management, location scouting, and photo documentation are included in AGM’s full-service packages. Contact AGM for a custom quote based on your format, quantity, and market.
Campaign costs vary based on market, location type, poster size, and campaign complexity. A campaign in New York City using large format posters on prime surfaces costs more than a standard-format campaign in a secondary market. We build specific quotes for every campaign based on the actual parameters of the brief.
| Campaign Scale | Locations | Typical Cost Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighborhood Focus | 20 to 30 | Contact for quote | Local launches, event support |
| City Campaign | 40 to 60 | Contact for quote | Tour promotion, product launch |
| Multi-City | 40 to 80 per city | Contact for quote per city | National launch, national tour |
| Premium Large Format | 15 to 25 | Contact for quote | Brand statement campaigns |
The relationship between street postering and social media has changed how brands think about the format’s value. In the pre-social era, a street postering campaign reached only the people who physically walked past the installation locations. In the current environment, every installation is a potential social media asset that can be photographed and shared by anyone who encounters it.
Campaigns designed with social amplification in mind produce designs that are worth photographing. A bold, visually striking installation that looks good in a phone camera photo and reads clearly as a square Instagram crop is more likely to be shared than an installation that is visually competent but not arresting. We advise clients on creative decisions that maximize the social amplification potential of street postering campaigns, including format choices, color, and the visual density that photographs well in different lighting conditions.
Tagging and location attribution on social posts from installation locations creates additional signals for the brand. When multiple accounts post photos of the same installation with location tags, it creates a cluster of organic content associated with that neighborhood and that brand. Search for any major street postering campaign in a city like New York and the social media trail is often visible weeks after the physical installation has degraded or been covered. That organic content trail extends the campaign’s effective life beyond the physical duration of the installation.
Street postering is the practice of installing printed posters on walls, construction barriers, fences, utility infrastructure, and other vertical surfaces in urban public spaces as a form of advertising or promotion. Professional street postering campaigns use wheat paste or other adhesives to install large-format printed posters at pre-scouted high-traffic locations in target neighborhoods.
Standard outdoor advertising uses purchased placements in designated advertising structures: billboards, bus shelters, subway car cards, and transit posters. Street postering installs in non-standard locations on walls, barriers, and building surfaces outside the traditional outdoor advertising inventory. The non-standard placement is what creates the street-level credibility that standard outdoor cannot replicate.
Music labels and artists, film studios, streetwear and sneaker brands, event promoters, food and beverage brands, tech companies, and lifestyle brands are the most frequent users of street postering. The format is most effective for brands targeting 18 to 40 year old urban consumers who are culturally engaged and visually aware of their street environment.
We select street postering locations based on three criteria: target audience concentration in the area, foot traffic volume at the specific surface, and physical suitability of the surface for poster installation. We conduct a field location scout for every campaign to identify the specific walls and barriers that best match the campaign brief before any production begins.
Poster campaigns are priced by package and market. Standard poster campaigns (24×36) start at $4,500 for 100 posters (two-week run) and $5,500 for 200 posters. Large format (48×72) campaigns start at $10,500 for 100 posters and $13,500 for 200. An optional two-week maintenance extension is $3,500. Street posters installed with wheat paste on brick or concrete in normal conditions last three to six weeks. Weather, surface type, and location all affect longevity. Protected surfaces in dry conditions produce the longest-lasting installations. We can provide duration estimates for specific markets and time windows when planning a campaign.
Common sizes include 24×36 inches for standard wall placements, 48×72 inches for construction barrier and high-visibility surfaces, and custom multi-sheet large-format installations for premium placements. Size selection depends on the available surface inventory in the target locations and the viewing distance at those locations.
Yes. We photograph every installation with GPS timestamps within 24 hours of installation and deliver a complete photo report to the client. The report shows every location, every surface, and every installed poster in the campaign. Documentation is standard for every campaign we run.
Yes, though the campaign parameters need to account for seasonal weather conditions. Summer campaigns in markets with hot, dry conditions produce the longest-lasting installations. Winter campaigns in cold, wet markets need commercial methylcellulose paste, weatherproof paper stock, and shorter expected installation duration. We adjust campaign specifications for seasonal conditions in each market and have run successful campaigns in January in New York and in August in Miami. The format is viable year-round with the right material and timing adjustments.
