For every major trade show and convention in the United States, the window between show close and midnight is when tens of thousands of attendees move through the surrounding city—to dinner at the restaurants in the convention district, to brand-sponsored parties at nearby venues, to the bar zones where the real networking happens. That movement is dense, predictable, and almost entirely underserved by exhibitors who packed up when the hall lights went down.
Convention projection advertising and LED truck campaigns exist specifically to own this window. A high-lumen projector throwing a brand message onto the exterior facade of the Las Vegas Convention Center on Paradise Road at 9 PM during CES week is visible to every person walking between the hall and the Strip hotels. Not every outdoor environment is ideal for projection advertising. The format requires a combination of factors to work effectively: a suitable projection surface, a captive pedestrian audience at the right distance, low enough ambient light to allow the projection to read clearly, and a viewing angle that lets most of the audience see the image without distortion.
Convention districts, particularly in the evening hours when the show floor has closed, check every one of these boxes better than almost any other outdoor environment.
The architectural surfaces around major convention centers are typically large, flat, light-colored concrete or stone facades—exactly the surfaces that produce the best projection quality. The Moscone Center in San Francisco has a large blank exterior panel on its Howard Street face. The Las Vegas Convention Center’s exterior walls on Paradise Road and Convention Center Drive are broad, light, and well-angled toward the pedestrian approach. The Javits Center’s exterior facades facing 11th Avenue are large-scale surfaces visible from the street approach at the scale needed for projection to read at distance.
The pedestrian concentration in convention districts during the evening hours is highly predictable. The routes between the convention center, the headquarters hotels, and the dining and entertainment zones are consistent—attendees do not wander randomly through the city. They follow the same corridors every evening because those corridors connect the things they need to get to. A projection positioned on one of those corridors is not estimating where the audience will be. It knows.
And convention district architecture, by design, creates a particular kind of evening light environment: the venue buildings themselves are lit but not garishly so, the street lighting is adequate for safety but not bright enough to wash out a high-lumen projection, and the visual environment is less saturated with competing light sources than an entertainment strip or a stadium approach. The projection cuts through in a way that it might not in Times Square but absolutely does on Howard Street in SoMa at 9 PM.
CES creates one of the most favorable environments for convention projection advertising in the US convention calendar. The Las Vegas Convention Center sits at 3150 Paradise Road, and the exterior walls facing Paradise Road carry significant projection potential for campaigns targeting the evening attendee flow between the LVCC campus and the Strip hotels a mile to the west.
The convention district around the LVCC during CES week is dense with attendee pedestrian traffic from approximately 7 PM through midnight on every show night. The brand-sponsored parties and private events that define the CES evening social calendar draw attendees out of the Strip hotels and into the convention district repeatedly—CES evening events at the LVCC, at nearby venues on Paradise Road and Desert Inn Road, and at the satellite spaces around the monorail corridor create a sustained two-way pedestrian flow that differs from the one-directional morning show open rush.

The Dreamforce activation geography in SoMa San Francisco creates an exceptional projection opportunity. The Moscone Center’s North building, with its facade facing Howard Street between 4th and 3rd Streets, presents a large exterior surface that is visible from the Howard Street pedestrian approach during the evening hours. Dreamforce evening events—the satellite dinners, the brand-sponsored parties, the networking sessions that scatter across the SoMa restaurant zone—draw a continuous stream of badge-wearing attendees through this corridor from approximately 7 PM through 11 PM on every show night.
Howard Street in SoMa during Dreamforce week has a particular energy in the evening that day-shift convention marketing does not fully capture. The daytime Howard Street is hectic and transactional—people moving between sessions, focused on schedules. The evening Howard Street is more social, more relaxed, more visually attentive. An attendee walking from the Marriott Marquis toward a dinner reservation at one of the Mission Street restaurants is taking in the neighborhood in a way that the morning show rush does not allow. The photographic culture at Dreamforce is high—the conference attracts a lot of marketing professionals and social media practitioners who document the conference experience extensively. A projection advertising installation on the Moscone exterior during the evening will be photographed repeatedly by passing attendees and will appear in conference social content for the remaining show days. This earned organic social extension is part of the value calculation for evening projection campaigns, particularly at conferences where the attendee population skews toward marketing and technology professionals with large social followings.
The Yerba Buena Gardens complex at Mission and 3rd Street, directly adjacent to the Moscone Center, includes the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Metreon complex, and several hotel and cultural facilities that anchor the SoMa entertainment zone. When foot traffic patterns shift during a convention week—an unexpected venue change, a major brand event that draws attendees to a different location—the LED truck can adapt. Running a projection advertising campaign at a major trade show requires specific technical and logistical preparation that determines whether the campaign works or fails. Here is what the execution actually involves.
The minimum useful specification for a convention district projection campaign is a 20,000-lumen unit capable of throwing a clear image at 50 to 150 feet on a standard exterior building surface. Most convention district projection campaigns benefit from higher lumen counts—30,000 to 50,000 lumens—because the ambient light environment in a convention district, while not as bright as a commercial entertainment zone, is not the controlled darkness of a theater.
The projector must be positioned on a stable surface at an angle that allows the image to land flat and undistorted on the target wall. Keystone correction technology can compensate for moderate off-angle positioning, but the best projection geometry is as close to perpendicular to the target surface as possible. We scout every projection location before campaign launch to identify the optimal projector position, calculate the throw distance for the chosen lumen specification, and confirm that the viewing angle from the pedestrian audience zone produces a readable image.
Convention projection content needs to be designed for scale and for the viewing conditions of the outdoor environment. The most valuable projection window at a major convention is 7 PM to 11 PM—the core evening activity window when foot traffic is heaviest and the audience is most socially engaged. A four-hour nightly projection run for the three middle nights of a major show produces a cumulative audience exposure that rivals or exceeds what many interior sponsor placements achieve over the same period.
We typically recommend against projecting on the first night of a major convention (when logistics are still unsettled and attendee patterns have not yet formed) and against projecting on the final night (when a significant portion of the audience has departed early). The three middle nights represent the optimal campaign window for most shows.

The McCormick Place convention district is more geographically isolated than the Moscone or Javits environments—it sits at the south end of Museum Campus, buffered from the main Chicago hotel and restaurant zone by the stretch of Lake Shore Drive. This isolation means that projection advertising on the McCormick exterior is less surrounded by competing visual noise than it would be in a denser urban convention district, which amplifies the visual impact of the installation. An attendee approaching the venue for an evening event from the CTA Green Line at the Cermak-McCormick Place stop, or walking the McCormick connector from the Hyatt Regency at 2233 South Martin Luther King Drive, encounters the projection in a relatively clean visual environment.

Convention projection advertising is a specialist format, and its value is different from standard out-of-home advertising in ways that matter for how it should be planned and what it should cost relative to its alternatives.
Standard OOH—a billboard, a transit shelter, a building wrap—creates impressions on a general audience passing by a fixed location over days or weeks. The audience is broad, the impressions accumulate slowly, and the environment is normal enough that the ad does not command special attention.
Convention projection advertising creates impressions on a highly specific, identifiable audience during a compressed time window, in an environment that is abnormal enough that the projection commands genuine attention. An attendee walking past a projection installation on a convention center wall is not filtering it into the background the way they filter a billboard on their morning commute. They are in a heightened perceptual state—they are at a major industry event, surrounded by professional peers, in an unfamiliar city environment—and the unusual quality of a large-scale building projection in this context registers at a different level than standard advertising.
The combination of audience specificity, environmental attentiveness, and visual scale is what makes this format worth the specialist execution it requires. The CPM may look high compared to a standard billboard. The impression quality is not comparable.

An LED truck is mobile, route-adjustable, and more adaptable to shifting attendee patterns. They serve different campaign needs: projection for landmark visual moments, LED trucks for broader geographic coverage across the convention district.
Projection advertising in the public streets and on building facades outside the venue’s contracted footprint does not require show sponsorship.
