Normal poster board is 22×28 inches. We explain all the sizes, materials, and how poster board compares to commercially printed campaign posters.
What size is normal poster board? The standard answer is 22 inches wide by 28 inches tall. This is the dimension you’ll find at Staples, Target, Walmart, and any office or school supply store in the United States.
But poster board comes in more than one size. There’s a smaller version and a larger version, plus foam-core varieties in several dimensions. And poster board as a category is completely different from commercially printed advertising posters.
We work on the commercial side of the poster world. Our campaigns involve professional large-format printing and street placement across major US cities. But we get questions about poster board often enough that it makes sense to cover both worlds thoroughly here.
The normal, standard poster board size in the United States is 22 inches by 28 inches. This is what most people mean when they say “a poster board.” It’s sold in white, black, and assorted colors. It comes in packs of 5 to 25 sheets. It’s made of stiff cardboard, typically 2 to 4 ply.
At 22×28 inches, the board is large enough to hold a student science fair project with room for a title, several sections of text, and photos or charts. It fits on a standard school desk or a portable easel. It can be carried under one arm and fits in most standard car trunks without folding.
The 22×28 dimension also fits into many standard retail display holders. Pharmacy chains, grocery stores, and dollar stores often have display stands built to hold 22×28 sign inserts. This makes the size useful for last-minute point-of-sale signage in retail environments.
Size Check: Normal poster board is 22×28 inches. This is 4.28 square feet of surface area. It’s narrower and shorter than the standard advertising poster (24×36 inches / 6 sq ft), but it’s the most common foam-core and cardboard format sold at retail.
Poster board isn’t one-size-fits-all. Here’s the complete size range available in the US market.
| Size Name | Dimensions (inches) | Common Use | Where Found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 14 x 22 | Tabletop signs, small displays | Craft stores, office supply |
| Regular / Standard | 22 x 28 | School projects, science fairs, retail signage | Mass market, office supply, craft |
| Large | 24 x 36 | Large displays, trade show boards | Office supply, art supply, online |
| Jumbo / Extra Large | 28 x 40 | Oversized displays, large event signage | Art supply, specialty stores |
| Standard Foam Core | 20 x 30 | Photo mounting, professional displays | Art supply, framing shops |
| Large Foam Core | 32 x 40 | Trade show panels, large-format mounting | Art supply, sign shops |
| Full Sheet Foam Core | 48 x 96 (4×8 ft) | Exhibition walls, large event staging | Sign shops, specialty suppliers |
The physical material of a poster board affects its stiffness, thickness, durability, and how well it holds writing materials or mounted prints.
This is the inexpensive product found at dollar stores, Walmart, and school supply sections. It’s typically 2 to 4 ply cardboard (a few sheets of card glued together). It has one smooth white (or colored) surface for drawing or writing. The back is often plain cardboard brown.
Cardboard poster board is lightweight, bends easily if you’re not careful, and can buckle in high humidity. It’s designed for short-term indoor use. A school science fair is the ideal application.
Foam core is a stiffer, more professional product. It’s built with a layer of rigid foam sandwiched between two thin sheets of coated paper or cardboard. The typical thickness is 3/16 of an inch (about 5mm).
Foam core holds its shape without bending. It stands upright in display easels without flopping. Graphic designers and print professionals use foam core as a mounting substrate for printed pieces. When we do trade show work, foam core is often the backing material for printed panels.
You can cut foam core with a sharp X-Acto knife and a metal ruler. This makes it popular for architectural models, custom signage, and display props as well as poster boards.
Above foam core in stiffness and durability is gatorboard (a brand name for a rigid foam board with a harder surface layer). Gatorboard resists moisture better and holds up longer in high-traffic display environments. It’s used for permanent or semi-permanent retail display pieces.
At 22×28 or 24×36, gatorboard-mounted prints look nearly as good as custom-framed pieces. We’ve used gatorboard for pop-up shop displays in SoHo and along Venice Beach and for temporary brand installations at trade shows.
Choosing the Right Material: For a school project that lasts one day: standard cardboard board. For a professional trade show display that survives multiple events: foam core or gatorboard. For an outdoor display that needs to survive weather: none of the above. Use printed vinyl or aluminum-based composite panels for outdoor applications.
The confusion between poster boards and printed advertising posters is real and common. Here’s a direct side-by-side comparison.
| Feature | Normal Poster Board (22×28) | Commercial Printed Poster (24×36) |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Cardboard or foam core | Paper (various stocks) |
| Content creation | Hand-drawn, written, or glued on | Professional printed design |
| Typical cost (each) | $1 to $5 | $2 to $15 (print shop) |
| Durability | Short-term indoor only | Days to weeks outdoors on coated stock |
| Image quality | Limited by handmade process | Photographic quality, full color |
| Standard size | 22 x 28 inches | 24 x 36 inches |
| Purchase location | Craft store, office supply | Print shop, online print service |
| Best for | School projects, homemade signs | Commercial campaigns, advertising |
Even in professional campaigns, poster board dimensions matter in specific applications.
Trade shows are the most common overlap. At a trade show booth in the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York or the Moscone Center in San Francisco, freestanding display boards need to be rigid enough to stand, sized to fit the booth space, and visually polished enough to represent the brand properly. Foam core poster boards in 24×36 or 32×40 are common in this context, with prints dry-mounted or face-mounted to the board.
Pop-up retail installations also use rigid boards for temporary walls and display panels. A brand pop-up in the Arts District of Los Angeles or in Chicago’s River North might build interior walls from foam core panels covered in printed graphics. The board size affects how many seams appear in the finished installation.
Event signage is another legitimate use. Directional signs at a conference or festival often use poster board. 22×28 is the most common format because it fits portable easels and can be printed at an office supply store the day before the event if needed.
If you need standard 22×28 poster boards, here’s where to look.
Office supply chains carry the full range of standard poster boards, including multi-packs of 5, 10, and 25 sheets in white and assorted colors. Craft stores stock a wider variety of colors, finishes (glitter, metallic, matte), and board weights. Mass market retailers like Walmart and Target carry basic white and assorted-color packs in the school supply aisle.
For foam core in normal sizes (20×30, 24×36), art supply stores are the best source. Online retailers carry foam core in larger quantities at better per-unit prices for bulk orders.
For professional-grade gatorboard or rigid PVC boards in standard poster dimensions, specialty sign shops and large-format print vendors are the right source. These aren’t sold at consumer retail; they’re ordered through professional channels.
Normal poster board in the US is 22×28 inches. This is the standard size sold at most retail stores for school projects, office signs, and general display use.
Yes. Most office supply stores stock 22×28 as their standard poster board size. They may also carry a smaller 14×22 option and a larger 24×36 format depending on the specific store.
Regular poster board is thin cardboard, 2 to 4 ply, lightweight, and flexible. Foam core has a rigid foam interior sandwiched between coated paper surfaces, making it stiffer and more suitable for professional displays. Foam core is more expensive but holds its shape far better.
Yes, but standard inkjet and laser printers can’t feed poster board because it’s too stiff and thick. For printed poster board, you’d need a large-format printer that accepts rigid media, or you print on paper and then mount the print to the board using spray adhesive or dry mounting.
22 x 28 = 616 square inches, which equals 4.28 square feet. A standard advertising poster at 24×36 is 6 square feet, about 40 percent larger than a normal poster board.
Science fair poster boards are almost always 22×28 inches, the standard retail size. Some events specify tri-fold boards that unfold to 36×48 inches or similar dimensions for larger displays.

No. Foam core has a foam center between two thin paper surfaces. Gatorboard (a brand name) has a harder, more durable surface layer over a denser foam core. Gatorboard is stiffer, heavier, resists moisture better, and costs more. It’s the preferred option for professional trade show and retail displays.
