Standard poster dimensions are the backbone of every printed campaign. Whether you are planning a 500-unit street saturation run or a single large-format outdoor installation, knowing the standard dimensions prevents mistakes that cost time and budget. The numbers are not complicated, but understanding why each dimension is standard, and where it applies, is what separates a well-planned campaign from a wasted print run.
At American Guerrilla Marketing, we spec poster dimensions for clients across every major US market, every week. We have seen what happens when dimensions are chosen without thinking through the installation environment. We have also seen what happens when clients get it right: posters that dominate their target locations, campaigns that generate real results, and print budgets that work efficiently.
This is the complete guide to standard poster dimensions. Every measurement, every application, and every detail that matters when you go from spec to print to street.
The US printing and marketing industry has converged on a core set of standard dimensions. These are the sizes that print vendors price competitively, that display hardware accommodates, and that our field teams install every day.
Here are the standard dimensions our campaigns use most frequently:
The 11 x 17 inch dimension is the entry-level standard for street marketing posters. The tabloid format is exactly twice the area of a letter sheet. It is printed on equipment found in virtually every commercial print environment. For high-volume, low-cost saturation campaigns covering maximum geographic area, this dimension is the right choice. Installation is fast. Cost is low. Volume is the goal.
The limitation: visibility at distance is constrained. With standard outdoor viewing distances of 15 to 20 feet, an 11 x 17 poster needs very bold typography to read clearly. Treat this dimension as a close-range format. Use it where your audience is walking slowly and passing within 10 feet of the installation surface.
The 18 x 24 dimension is the first standard that delivers meaningful outdoor visibility at street distance. At one and a half feet wide by two feet tall, the format reads clearly from 20 feet with appropriate type sizing and contrast. This is the standard for yard signs, outdoor A-frame displays, and transit-adjacent campaign placements.
Print cost per unit is approximately double that of an 11 x 17. You get roughly double the visual area. The cost-to-impact ratio is generally favorable, especially for campaigns where the target audience is in vehicles or moving quickly through an area.
The 24 x 36 inch dimension is the primary standard for US poster campaigns. This is the format most print vendors list first, most clients request by default, and most field teams install most often. At two feet wide by three feet tall, the 24 x 36 has the best balance of visibility, cost, and surface compatibility of any standard dimension.
Visibility: a properly designed 24 x 36 reads from 30 to 35 feet away. Cost: moderate, typically $1.50 to $4.00 per unit at 100 to 500 unit quantities. Surface compatibility: fits on virtually every outdoor wall, construction fence panel, and retail window without special preparation.
The 27 x 40 one-sheet has been the theatrical movie poster standard for decades. At two feet three inches wide by three feet four inches tall, it carries strong entertainment industry associations. For music, film, and event campaigns targeting audiences who recognize industry formats, the 27 x 40 signals credibility and seriousness.
The 27 x 40 does not scale directly from 24 x 36 artwork because the aspect ratio differs. Build a focused file for this dimension. Do not adapt a 24 x 36 layout and expect clean results at 27 x 40.
At three feet wide by four feet tall, the 36 x 48 enters large format territory. This dimension covers 12 square feet of surface area. It is visible from 50 feet away with bold design. It requires specialty large-format printing equipment and two-person installation. The visual impact at premium locations justifies the cost premium over standard dimensions.
Four feet wide by six feet tall. The largest single-sheet dimension we routinely work with at American Guerrilla Marketing for outdoor campaign installations. At this scale, a poster is more than marketing material. It is a visual landmark. The 48 x 72 creates a presence that people notice and remember, and sometimes photograph and share on social media, extending the campaign’s reach beyond the physical installation.
The Primary Standard: When no other factor determines the decision, choose 24 x 36 inches. It has earned the title of primary standard dimension for good reasons. Start there and deviate only when the campaign specifics demand it.
| Dimension | cm Equivalent | Area (sq in) | Recommended DPI | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 x 11 in | 21.6 x 27.9 cm | 93.5 | 300 | Counter displays, handouts |
| 11 x 17 in | 27.9 x 43.2 cm | 187 | 300 | Volume campaigns, poles, campus |
| 12 x 18 in | 30.5 x 45.7 cm | 216 | 300 | Indoor retail, point-of-sale |
| 18 x 24 in | 45.7 x 61 cm | 432 | 300 | Yard signs, outdoor entry, retail |
| 24 x 36 in | 61 x 91.4 cm | 864 | 300 | Primary street campaign standard |
| 27 x 40 in | 68.6 x 101.6 cm | 1,080 | 300 | Entertainment, cinema one-sheet |
| 36 x 48 in | 91.4 x 121.9 cm | 1,728 | 150 | Large outdoor, high-impact |
| 48 x 72 in | 121.9 x 182.9 cm | 3,456 | 100-150 | Premium outdoor statement |
The aspect ratio of a poster dimension determines how artwork scales between sizes. Understanding ratios prevents distortion when you adapt a design from one standard dimension to another.
The 24 x 36 and 48 x 72 dimensions share a 2:3 ratio. Artwork designed for 24 x 36 scales precisely to 48 x 72 by doubling both dimensions. No proportion adjustment needed. The design scales cleanly.
The 18 x 24 and 36 x 48 dimensions share a 3:4 ratio. These two formats also scale cleanly to each other. A design for 18 x 24 doubles to 36 x 48 without any proportion distortion.
The 11 x 17 format has an approximate 1:1.55 ratio. This does not match any other common dimension cleanly. Scaling 11 x 17 artwork to 24 x 36 requires proportion adjustment because the ratios differ. Build separate design files if you need both formats in a campaign.
The 27 x 40 one-sheet has a 1:1.48 ratio that is unique to that format. Do not try to scale from any other standard dimension to 27 x 40 without redesigning the layout.
Setting up your digital design file correctly at the start prevents revision cycles and reprints. Here is the exact file setup for each standard poster dimension:
11 x 17 inches: Canvas size 11.25 x 17.25 inches. Safe zone 0.25 inches from trim on all sides. 300 DPI. CMYK color mode. Save as PDF/X-1a for print submission.
18 x 24 inches: Canvas size 18.25 x 24.25 inches. Safe zone 0.25 inches from trim. 300 DPI. CMYK. PDF/X-1a for print.
24 x 36 inches: Canvas size 24.25 x 36.25 inches. Safe zone 0.25 inches from trim. 300 DPI. CMYK. At 300 DPI, this file is approximately 7,275 x 10,875 pixels. Expect large file sizes (200 to 500 MB in layered format). Flatten all layers before exporting.
27 x 40 inches: Canvas size 27.25 x 40.25 inches. Same specifications as above.
36 x 48 inches: Canvas size 36.25 x 48.25 inches. 150 DPI is appropriate. CMYK. This is a large format file and typically 150 DPI is the maximum resolution the print equipment can use effectively.
48 x 72 inches: Canvas size 48.25 x 72.25 inches. 100-150 DPI. CMYK. Confirm resolution with your large format print vendor before setting up the file. Some large format printers have specific requirements.
Designer’s Note: Always work at actual print size, not at screen-optimized size. Designing at 50 percent of the final dimension and then scaling up in the print file is a common mistake that reduces apparent resolution and can expose artifacts in photographic elements.
Every standard dimension has a natural home in the installation environment. Matching dimension to surface is as important as matching dimension to budget and viewing distance.
Utility poles and cylindrical surfaces: The 11 x 17 wraps around standard poles without excessive overlap. The paper bends around the circumference with less stress than larger formats. For poles, 11 x 17 is the standard installation dimension.
Chain link and wire fencing: The 11 x 17 and 18 x 24 formats work well on chain link because the wire pattern provides natural mounting points and the smaller formats do not create excessive wind load. Larger formats on chain link need heavier adhesion and more installation time.
Flat plywood barriers and painted walls: These surfaces are ideal for every standard dimension from 18 x 24 up to 48 x 72 and larger. Flat surfaces allow clean adhesion and clean appearance at any scale. The 24 x 36 is the default choice for flat wall surfaces. Larger dimensions work when the wall and budget justify the upgrade.
Glass storefronts and windows: Glass works well for 11 x 17 and 18 x 24 installations using static cling or tape application. Larger formats on glass need careful application to prevent air bubbles and adhesion failures. Interior-facing glass signage often uses 11 x 17 to 24 x 36 depending on window size.
Print cost is the most visible cost driver when selecting standard dimensions. But installation labor costs also scale with dimension and should be factored into any campaign budget.
Our general cost ratios by dimension (with 11 x 17 as baseline):
These ratios are approximate and vary by vendor, market, and surface conditions. But the order of magnitude is consistent. A 48 x 72 installation costs roughly 15 to 20 times as much to print and install as an 11 x 17 per location. That investment is justified when the location delivers 15 to 20 times the impression value. That is the calculation our teams run before recommending a large format upgrade.
The right standard poster dimension depends on what the poster needs to accomplish and where it needs to accomplish it. Here is a practical guide by campaign type.
Concert and event promotion: 24×36 is the working standard. Event posters at this size are readable at fifteen feet from the wall, fit standard venue display spaces, and produce strong visual impact without being oversized for the typical venue corridor or outdoor post. For major events with premium wall placements in high-traffic areas, 36×48 or 48×72 upgrades are worth the cost at the right locations.
Restaurant and bar openings: 18×24 works well for windows and door placements where space is limited. 24×36 handles the primary window display and any adjacent wall placements. Interior menu boards and promotional displays often use 11×17 as a secondary format alongside the primary promotional poster.
Retail product launches: In-store point-of-purchase displays typically run 11×17 to 24×36 depending on the display fixture. Window displays range from 18×24 to custom widths depending on the storefront. Exterior wall placements during product launch campaigns often use 24×36 or larger for maximum presence in the approach zone.
Political and advocacy campaigns: Lawn signs and yard signs use 18×24 as the standard. Street-level political posters are typically 11×17 to 24×36. Large outdoor locations like construction walls use 36×48 or 48×72 for maximum presence in pedestrian-heavy corridors.
Brand awareness campaigns on construction walls: That’s where larger formats pay off most dramatically. A 48×72 format on a scaffolding panel in lower Manhattan reaches hundreds of thousands of pedestrians per week. At that scale, the cost per impression is among the lowest of any advertising format in the market. The investment in a larger format at a premium location is justified by the impression volume the location delivers.
Neighborhood-level business promotion: Local businesses deploying posters in a one-mile radius around their location typically find 11×17 to 18×24 most cost-effective. These formats produce enough visual presence at close-range pedestrian distances without the higher production cost of larger dimensions. When a local business has a few premium placements at high-visibility locations, 24×36 is appropriate as a step-up format for those specific spots.
The primary standard poster dimension is 24 x 36 inches. Other standard dimensions include 11 x 17 (tabloid), 18 x 24 (medium), 27 x 40 (one-sheet), and 36 x 48 (large format). The right standard depends on the application, installation surface, viewing distance, and budget.
For standard outdoor street campaigns, 24 x 36 inches is the primary dimension. For high-volume coverage campaigns, 11 x 17 is common. For premium single-location installations, 36 x 48 or 48 x 72 is appropriate. Many campaigns use multiple dimensions at the same time to cover different surface types.
The standard dimensions for printed paper posters (11 x 17, 18 x 24, 24 x 36, etc.) differ from common foam core and cardboard poster board sizes (22 x 28, 20 x 30). If you are mounting a printed poster on a rigid board, you need to either match the dimensions exactly or trim one to fit the other.
Multiply inches by 2.54. The 24 x 36 inch poster is 60.96 x 91.44 centimeters. The 11 x 17 is 27.94 x 43.18 centimeters. The 18 x 24 is 45.72 x 60.96 centimeters. For international print vendors, always provide both measurements or confirm which system the vendor prefers.
The 24 x 36 inch poster has a 2:3 aspect ratio. This means the height is 1.5 times the width. This ratio is clean and mathematically simple, which is one of the reasons it has become the dominant standard. It also means the format scales perfectly to 12 x 18 and 48 x 72 without any proportion distortion.
Standard poster dimensions are physical formats. Digital ad sizes are specified in pixels and follow different standards (set by the IAB for display advertising). A 24 x 36 printed poster design can be repurposed for digital, but it needs to be resized and often reformatted for the digital medium. The two sets of standards do not overlap directly.

The standard bleed for US poster printing is 0.125 inches (1/8 inch) on each side. A 24 x 36 poster file with bleed is set up at 24.25 x 36.25 inches. An 11 x 17 file with bleed is set up at 11.25 x 17.25. Some vendors specify 0.25 inch bleed for large format. Always confirm with your specific print vendor before finalizing files.
