Mural Artist Jobs in Advertising | American Guerrilla Marketing — American Guerrilla Marketing campaign

By , AGM Campaign Director | Published May 2026 | Updated May 2026

AGM has run 500+ street-level poster campaigns across 50 U.S. markets since 2014. Every placement is GPS-tagged and independently verifiable.

If you’re searching for mural artist jobs advertising brands at street level, American Guerrilla Marketing is one of the few agencies in the country that turns outdoor mural painting into a full campaign discipline. Our mural advertising program places skilled muralists on walls in major metro markets, college towns, and entertainment districts — executing branded artwork for national film releases, record labels, consumer tech brands, and more. This page explains who we hire, what the work looks like, and exactly how to apply.

About American Guerrilla Marketing: AGM has executed street-level campaigns in over 200 U.S. markets and 15 countries. Our field teams have delivered branded murals, wheatpaste campaigns, and experiential activations for major record labels, national film releases, and consumer tech brands

About the Role

Mural artist jobs at American Guerrilla Marketing are production-level field engagements. You’re not painting decorative murals in a gallery — you’re executing brand identity on exterior walls, in high-foot-traffic corridors, under real-world conditions and tight campaign timelines. Most projects are scoped in advance with approved brand artwork. Your job is faithful, high-quality reproduction at scale, with artistic latitude on texture, shading, and surface adaptation.

Work spans from single-day pop-up murals for concert drops to multi-week installations for national brand rollouts. Artists may be dispatched solo or as part of a two- to four-person crew, depending on wall footage and deadline. Campaign clients include entertainment companies, CPG brands, fashion houses, and tech startups with real marketing budgets — this is professional commissioned work, not spec.

Our guerrilla marketing services span dozens of formats, and murals are consistently among the highest-ROI placements we execute. That demand is why we’re always building our artist network.

Traveling vs. Local Artists

AGM hires two categories of mural artists:

Local Market Artists are based in a specific metro and are our first call when a campaign drops in their city. Local artists are faster to mobilize, cheaper to deploy, and have informal knowledge of walls, lighting, and municipal quirks. We maintain rosters in every major U.S. market.

Traveling Campaign Artists have the flexibility to deploy anywhere on short notice — typically 48 to 72 hours. These artists are paid a travel premium and often work the largest, most visible wall placements. Travel is fully covered: flights, accommodation, per diem, and surface materials.

If you’re based in a major market and build a strong track record, we’ll often propose you for traveling roles as your availability and speed-of-deployment increase. Both categories are legitimate career tracks within the AGM artist network.

U.S. Cities Actively Hiring

We are actively seeking mural artists in the following markets. Campaign frequency is high in all of these metros. If your city is listed, you’re likely to be deployed within 30 days of onboarding.

  • Mural Artist in New York City, NY — Our highest-volume market. SoHo, Williamsburg, Bushwick, LIC, and Lower East Side.
  • Mural Artist in Los Angeles, CA — Silverlake, Echo Park, Melrose, West Hollywood, Downtown LA.
  • Mural Artist in Chicago, IL — Wicker Park, Logan Square, Pilsen, West Loop.
  • Mural Artist in Houston, TX — Montrose, Midtown, EaDo, Heights.
  • Mural Artist in Miami, FL — Wynwood Arts District, Little Haiti, Design District.
  • Mural Artist in Atlanta, GA — Little Five Points, Old Fourth Ward, Ponce City Corridor.
  • Mural Artist in Nashville, TN — The Gulch, East Nashville, 12 South.
  • Mural Artist in Austin, TX — East 6th, South Congress, Mueller.
  • Mural Artist in Philadelphia, PA — Fishtown, Northern Liberties, South Philly.
  • Mural Artist in Seattle, WA — Capitol Hill, Fremont, Pioneer Square.
  • Mural Artist in Denver, CO — RiNo, Five Points, Baker.
  • Mural Artist in Portland, OR — Pearl District, Alberta Arts District, SE Division.

International Markets

AGM executes mural campaigns globally. International placements are typically reserved for traveling artists who have completed at least two domestic AGM campaigns. Key international markets include:

  • London, UK — Shoreditch, Brixton, Hackney Wick. High demand for music and fashion brand murals.
  • Tokyo, Japan — Shimokitazawa, Harajuku, Shinjuku. Consumer tech and streetwear brand placements.
  • Mexico City, Mexico — La Roma, Condesa, Colonia Juárez. Entertainment label and streaming campaigns.
  • Berlin, Germany — Kreuzberg, Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg. Festival and touring artist activations.
  • Toronto, Canada — Kensington Market, Queen West, Distillery District.

International travel logistics, visas, and work permits are handled by AGM’s operations team. Artists are never responsible for sourcing their own permits on international projects.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Proven experience painting large-scale murals on exterior or interior surfaces (minimum 3 completed projects at 100 sq ft or larger)
  • Comfortable working at height using scaffolding, lifts, or extension ladders
  • Ability to faithfully reproduce supplied brand artwork from digital files (Illustrator/Photoshop grid projection or freehand grid transfer)
  • Strong grasp of exterior-grade paints: latex, elastomeric, and spray (Montana, Liquitex, or equivalent)
  • Physical capability to work 8–12 hour days on location
  • Reliable communication: responds to texts and emails within 2 hours during business hours
  • Own transportation for local market artists (or valid driver’s license for vehicle fleet access on-site)
  • Ability to pass a basic background check for high-security building access (required for some client brands)
  • U.S.-based artists must have valid work authorization; international artists must hold valid travel documents

Portfolio Requirements

Your portfolio is the single most important element of your application. Our creative directors review every submission personally. Include the following:

  • 5–10 mural photographs — wide shot showing full wall + close-up detail shots. Show scale, proportion, and edge work.
  • At least 2 commissioned or brand-applied projects — if you’ve painted for a brand, restaurant, real estate developer, or campaign, include it. This demonstrates you can execute others’ vision, not just your own.
  • Process documentation — in-progress shots, grid transfer images, or short time-lapses are strongly preferred and move applications to the top of the queue.
  • Surface diversity — cinder block, stucco, brick, wood, and metal surfaces all behave differently. Show us you’ve worked on more than one.
  • Portfolio URL or PDF — Instagram links are acceptable but a dedicated portfolio site or Behance/Cargo page is preferred. No Google Drives with broken sharing settings.

We do not require a formal art degree. What matters is demonstrated craft and a track record of showing up and finishing the wall.

Prior Employment History

We accept applications from artists across a wide range of backgrounds:

  • Independent muralists with freelance client history
  • Sign painters, scenic artists, and theatrical set painters
  • Graffiti and street art backgrounds with legal wall experience
  • Commercial artists transitioning from studio to field work
  • Architectural and interior design painters seeking brand-side commissions
  • Former employees of other mural agencies, experiential companies, or event production firms

All artists are engaged as independent contractors. You invoice us per project. There is no W-2 employment relationship, though artists who complete multiple campaigns reliably are given priority booking and may negotiate retainer arrangements for high-volume markets.

Scouting: Digital Pre-Scouting & Day-Of Wall Assessment

AGM’s production process begins before you step on-site. Here’s how scouting works at our agency:

Digital Pre-Scouting: Our operations team scouts candidate walls using Google Street View, satellite imagery, permit databases, and proprietary location data. You’ll receive a wall brief with estimated dimensions, surface type, sun exposure, and access notes before the project is confirmed. For wheatpaste and poster campaigns, this pre-scout often happens entirely remotely. For murals, it’s a starting point only.

Day-Of Assessment: You are expected to conduct a brief on-site assessment on the day of your first session. This includes verifying wall dimensions against the brief, checking surface condition (moisture, existing paint adhesion, cracks, protrusions), noting lighting for detail accuracy, and flagging any safety hazards. A short photo report is submitted to your AGM project contact before painting begins. This protects you, the client, and the wall owner.

Artists who identify and communicate issues clearly — rather than painting over a problem — are the ones we rebook. Good scouting discipline is a professional differentiator.

Compensation & Travel Budget

Mural artist jobs at AGM are paid on a project basis. Rates vary by wall size, complexity, timeline, and market. General ranges:

  • Small murals (under 200 sq ft): $400–$900 per project, typically 1–2 days
  • Mid-size murals (200–600 sq ft): $900–$2,500 per project
  • Large-format murals (600+ sq ft): $2,500–$8,000+, negotiated based on complexity and crew size
  • Traveling campaign premium: 15–25% added to base rate, plus covered flights, hotel, and $75/day per diem
  • Rush campaign premium: 20% for projects confirmed with fewer than 48 hours lead time

Paint, surface prep materials, and rented equipment (lifts, scaffolding) are always covered by AGM or the client. You never pay for project materials out of pocket.

Payment is processed within 14 days of project completion and photo documentation submission. We pay via ACH/direct deposit or check, per your preference on file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need formal art school training to apply for mural artist jobs in advertising?

No. We evaluate artists on their portfolio and demonstrated on-wall experience, not their educational credentials. Self-taught muralists, graffiti artists, and sign painters are welcome to apply.

Q: How quickly can I expect to be deployed after onboarding?

In high-volume markets (NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami), approved artists typically receive their first project brief within 2–4 weeks of onboarding, sometimes sooner during campaign surges like summer release windows and holiday pushes.

Q: Am I allowed to have my own clients while working with AGM?

Yes. AGM artists are independent contractors and are free to maintain their own client relationships. We simply ask that AGM project timelines and confidentiality requirements are respected, particularly for brand campaigns under NDA.

Q: What if a wall surface is in worse condition than the pre-scout indicated?

Document it with photos, contact your AGM project manager immediately, and do not begin painting until you have a go/no-go confirmation. We may adjust scope, timeline, or wall location. You will be compensated for confirmed prep time and site assessment time regardless of outcome.

Q: Does AGM own the artwork I create on their campaigns?

Brand campaigns use client-supplied artwork that clients own. Your execution photographs remain yours to use in your personal portfolio. You may not reproduce or sell the brand artwork itself. All of this is spelled out clearly in the per-project contractor agreement before you sign off.

Q: Are there opportunities to pitch original mural concepts to clients?

Yes, for clients who want custom original artwork rather than brand reproduction. Some campaigns — particularly for music artists, cultural brands, and non-profit activations — are open to artist-conceived concepts. Artists interested in creative pitch involvement should note this explicitly in their application.

Q: What types of brands does AGM typically execute mural campaigns for?

Our mural client mix includes major record labels and music streaming platforms, studio film and TV release campaigns, consumer tech product launches, CPG and beverage brands, fashion and streetwear labels, and entertainment venue openings. The work is brand-serious and typically lands in high-visibility urban locations where photos spread organically on social media.
